Freda Josephine McDonald aka Josephine Baker danced into the world in St. Louis in 1906. As young as age 10, she worked as a nanny, housegirl, and by 14 she had already been married, divorced and was working as a comic on the TOBA circuit. Before her more sophisticated recordings with the Jazz du Casino de Paris Orchestra, Baker cut this more "raw" and playful recording of Then I'll Be Happy with Le Jacobs Band of Leige, Belgium. Josephine had an indomitable spirit and a desire to please her audiences whether for a laugh or for the joy of music and European audiences were loyal and appreciative. She became the highest paid and most successful entertainer in Europe in '27 and the skinny "too black" kid from St Louis would also become one of the most beautiful and most photographed women in the world.

I love her early period when she often did a comic take on songs and she always seemed to keep that sense of play as she moved to a richer, deeper style.

MrJimmieNoone, I don't know how to reply to your comment other than you probably will not need to bring your own sugar.

Je voudrais bien suçoter leur doigts de pied et puis la manger très lentement. Elle est tellement douce.

She gave back more than she had received helping homeless children of all races. Mis, Baker was also a French hero helping the French Underground fight the Nazi. Many times she placed her life in danger spying on the French Nazi Occupation during WWII. In France today she is considered a National Hero. May she RIP

I'm quite sure most of her audience were waiting in rapt attention for just one or two to dislodge. LOL Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your info. Columbia must have bought Odeon. This music is from a 1927 Odeon 78.
