A man's song-- written by a man who understood the loss of real love--the kind that hurts so much it does a man no good. No good at all. What Susan Horton did to Jimmy Webb --the incalculable hurt --inspired this masterpiece. Johnny's voice, Marty Paich's beautiful orchestration with background singers & orchestra, all add up to a heartbreaking classic. Wolfsky9, 68 y/o Now

I believe Johnny signed Jimmy Webb to his publishing company. Rivers was a very smart man. He owned the publishing to most of his songs. I'm sure this song is why he signed Webb.

The more I listen and find songs I never heard, the better Johnny Rivers gets.He is a true genius. No one compares in my opinion. And I have lots of favoritesall over the place, just Johnny Rivers tops them all. go see him live you will lovehim even more, He is the best live performer I have ever seen. I drove all day to see him in Houston, Tx then had to drive all night, to get to work on Mondaymorning, I'll do it again in a minute, Was a great show. go see him live you will see what I mean LOVE LOVE LOVE Johnny Rivers.

many a man has sung this song to himself, while many a woman has wondered why.

Johnny Rivers was the first to record this Jimmy Webb song, which in my opinion is the best version. By the way, he's the guy who discovered the Fifth Demension

As a Johnny Rivers fan from the 60's, I do not believe anyone ever did it better. It is just simply beautiful.

To me, having lived those times & remembering the 1st time I heard this masterpiece, it will forever be JR's song. Much credit goes to his voice & range, & the perfect production Marty Paich gave the song. Late Fall of '66, it WAS played on KDAY here in LA, but just not nearly enough. Why it wasn't promoted as it should have been is a mystery. Wolfsky9, 67 y/o

Always loved Glen Campbell's version, but have to say now that I've listened to Johnny's rendition - many times - am partial to that voice of Johnny's!

Orchestrated, arranged & produced by Marty Paich, this version SHOULD have been JR's follow-up to " Poor Side Of Town". Had it been, Glen's version, well done as it is by the great Al DeLory, would never have been as big as it was. A Heartbreaker & masterpiece, from Late'66. Wolfsky9, 67 y/o
