Written by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith. Arranged by Percy Faith.

This version is from the Johnny Mathis mono LP, "Merry Christmas" (UK Fontana TFL 5031)

The perfect tones of a then 22 year old Johnny Mathis combine with Percy Faith’s orchestra for one of the most widely regarded of Christmas songs. This is probably as good a vocal version of the song as there is out there.

The song was written in the 1930s and has had many cover versions since.

For his 7th album at Columbia, Johnny opted for a Christmas one and “Merry Christmas” was the result. It climbed to #3 on the album charts. Columbia didn’t release a single from the album in the US but they did put out a 4 track EP.

In the UK, “Winter Wonderland”/”Sleigh Ride” was issued as a 45 on Fontana and reached #17.

I takes me a moment to get used to Mathis' voice, as it's so different compared to most of the other classic Christmas singers, but once I do, I really cherish its originality.
