The incomparable Johnny Mathis sings "Joey, Joey, Joey", from Frank Loesser's landmark musical/opera "The Most Happy Fella". The superb musical collaboration on this album between Johnny and the legendary Don Costa continues on this LP entitled "Johnny", taking up from their previous (and first) release together, "Rapture" - and will continue into their next album, "Romantically" (Johnny's last for CBS for a time) and for many albums into his new contract with Mercury from 1963-1966. Johnny found a wonderfully sympathetic and supportive arranger in Don Costa - but then, Don has been providing superlative arrangements for almost everyone by this time, including Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, Paul Anka, Lloyd Price, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Vic Damone, and many other greats. The wonderful synergy between Johnny Mathis and Don Costa would continue throughout their creative relationship, hitting new highs with their subsequent efforts together. Recorded January 7, 1963. Produced by Ernie Altschuler. Orchestra under the direction of Don Costa.

Did not know 'Most Happy Fella' when this album came out so had no frame of reference. Suffice it to say that this bittersweet song, great other standards notwithstanding, was the one that I always came back to - the album's signature song to me, if you will..Great rendition.

Always a fan of Johnny's voice, but I can't vote for his rendition of this song; I don't believe it's the type of song that should be sung at such a fast tempo. It's too moving a sequence from the play and I think people pay more attention the message and music at the original "soliloquy" tempo. But then again, he wasn't singing to a theater audience, he was singing to the general public. In any event, I like the song and Johnny's voice but not this arrangement.

..I have always liked this song..and I have only heard the Mathis version..I was playing it at a station (MOR)..back in the early 90's..and many listeners thought it was a "single"..so did I ( was playing it from a cart)..and I got quite alot of calls about the song. Many listeners had no idea that it came from a "Braodway Show"..they just wanted to get the record. The LP was 30 years old at that time..and listeners were going out looking for the album. This was the only "cut" we played from this..but I love the tune.Mathis did a "great job" on this..and of course Don Costa did his "always" superb" arranging. Thanks for this post Mike...wonderful to hear it again!!
