The Battle of New Orleans was written by Jimmie Driftwood. The song details the 1815 Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of an American fighting alongside Andrew Jackson against British forces, but the tone is lighthearted. It has been recorded by many artists, but the one most often associated with this song is Johnny Horton his version was released as a single in 1959.

Driftwood, a school principal in Arkansas with a passion for history, set a historical account of the battle to this music in an attempt to get students interested in learning history. It worked, and Driftwood became well known in the region for his historical songs.

The Battle of New Orleans

In 1814 we took a little trip

Along with Colonel Jackson

down the mighty Mississip.

We took a little bacon

and we took a little beans

And we caught the bloody British

in the town of New Orleans.

[Chorus:]

We fired our guns and the

British kept a'comin.

There wasn't nigh as many

as there was a while ago.

We fired once more and

they began to runnin' on

Down the Mississippi

to the Gulf of Mexico.

We looked down the river

and we see'd the British come.

And there must have been a hundred of'em

beatin' on the drum.

They stepped so high

and they made the bugles ring.

We stood by our cotton bales

and didn't say a thing.

[Chorus]

Old Hickory said we could

take 'em by surprise

If we didn't fire our muskets

'til we looked 'em in the eye

We held our fire 'til we

see'd their faces well.

Then we opened up with squirrel guns

and really gave 'em ... well

[Chorus]

Yeah, they ran through the briars

and they ran through the brambles

And they ran through the bushes

where a rabbit couldn't go.

They ran so fast that the hounds

couldn't catch 'em

Down the Mississippi

to the Gulf of Mexico.

We fired our cannon

'til the barrel melted down.

So we grabbed an alligator

and we fought another round.

We filled his head with cannon balls,

and powdered his behind

And when we touched the powder off,

the gator lost his mind.

[Chorus]

Yeah, they ran through the briars

and they ran through the brambles

And they ran through the bushes

where a rabbit couldn't go.

They ran so fast

that the hounds couldn't catch 'em

Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

"This predicts what will happen to those "men" who love "men" and will happen to those "women" who love "women" in Washington D.C. Those who cause wars all over the world for money. Those who take children from good parents only to be criminally abused in foster homes by the sickos. I am not talking about those of you who are of the same sex love that each other. I support heterosexual relationships myself, but this is not about that, if you aren't sexual predators of the young. I don't care what you do behind closed doors. Personally I cringed at the men kissing each other in the Castro in San Fran. That may not be you, that was me. Washington D.C is compromised people that are manipulated for control. This will happen to the rich who steal from everyone. This will happen to the sell outs in the military who serve the above and who have no Soul OR brain.Justice, Human Dignity and the respect for a normal loving family will prevail over the death cult perverts in Washington D. C. and their corporate controllers.

Very well made song. Love the way the hymn is blended with the military style drum. However the details are inaccurate. The British did not run away from the battlefield. They withdrew in an orderly fashion, even when being fired upon from the enemy. And it did cost them even more men. But what the heck. It's a good song.

About 95% of the morons who call themselves American and don't even know why we celebrate 4th of July or Memorial Day need to listen to this. True patriotism here. Too bad we'll never hear any new songs about the once great America.

I know I would have remembered the subjects taught in school if there would have been a tune written with lyrics for whatever we had to learn. God bless Principal Driftwood! Wish there were more like him. All that I learned in History, Spanish, Algebra, Chemistry, etc., etc. classes that are somewhere in my brain, would be so much easier to recall. Writing lyrics made up of facts to remember and putting them to music is the best mnemonic for me.

Good Morning bloody Brit Youtubers, remember when you were ran out of America? Something to be said about Hillbillies with guns. 100% Americans. Does anyone think if we declare war on Israel the Jewish Americans would do the same?Johnny Horton - The Battle of New Orleans
