All that Anti war Rhetoric sounds good until fanatical people want you & your family dead! "I'd rather die on my feet, than live on my knees." Emiliano Zapata!

No offence to Mr. Cash, he's one of my all time favourites, but this doesn't come close to the original.

All war is hell , in the end what does it prove ? young men all cut down in their youth ,there s nothing fine and noble about it ...

My High School's band, Ross S. Sterling, played this when we beat our cross town rivals Robert E. Lee. No sweeter sound on a Texas Friday night!

Hilarious that everyone is saying "Yankee this, Dixie that..." when in reality, a CANADIAN wrote this song.

Just to clear something up: the song can mean whatever one wants it to--that's art. Whether it's a tragic ballad about the good parts of the south or a eulogy to the old ideology, or something else, it's still a great song. Can we all agree on that? That it's one awesome song performed by several amazing artists?

let me just say if u really look at your history, the civil war was about states rights and the civil war WAS NOT ABOUT SLAVERY, and I'm not racist

Great song, but Confederate apologism is retarded

To: Danny SearsSir, I completely agree with you and I am not a southerner. I have always believed that the REAL AMERICANS are those who fought for states' rights. Too bad you didn't win. We are now victims of the huge monster of federalism. It's choking us to death. Semper Fi

i see some of you asking Stoneman? George Stonemane Jr. was a Union calvery officer serving under General Sherman in Georgia mostly but later served leading raids on railtracks in Virginia (thus inspiring the song). He was a west point graduate and funny fact was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's roomate at westpoint. Jackson of course was a Confederate General and so of course there was the confusion.
