I am originally from Germany but have lived in Eugene Oregon half my life. Glad to hear the city name in an old Johnny Cash song.

I worked in the woods for a time. And now when I hear a high-lead operation off in the distance, I know what's going on because I know the whistles.

I love Johnny Cash. He was always able to take any song written by anyone on any subject and make it his own. A true troubadour.Growing up here in Texas, I remember my Paw Paw and Dad cut cedar posts for farm and ranch fences, pole barns etc. Paw Paw had a lot where they stored it and once a month a semi would come in from NM and they would load him up, he would hand over payment and haul it out.Later on in life I moved out of state and became a hardwood logger, felling, topping, skidding, and trucking. Also built a few logging roads. After a few years of it I went to work in a saw mill and stayed therefor several years. Part of that time was when the extremists where sabotaging equipment and trucks, and driving stakes into trees for chainsaws to hit, and generally trying to hurt loggers over the spotted owl. Memories of that is where I got the idea for the motto on my Old Time music community...."".Don't worry about the Spotted Owl...he'll be fine...Save Old Time Music ".

I work in the UK as an Arborist, and i love the whole history of woodsmen, My brother and I are the 5 generation of men in our family to do it, but holy crap, i talk to my great grandfather about it all the time when i complain about being tired at the end of a days work, i cant imagine doing it all with an axe or a handsaw, then again ive seen pictures of my grandfather when he was young and he was built like Schwarzenegger :D

This all runs in the family. Grandpa and great grandpa had a mill back in the day but then my grandpa who was a faller got caught up in a widow maker and broke his back, that was the end of things for while and the beginning of poor times. Very cool heritage

I love this song. My home town is Cottage Grove, OR which is between Roseburg and Eugene. Reminds me of what my dad always told me about logging.

My dad was a logger, crummy driver, donkey engineer, yarder engineer...saw a driver hit by a log and killed him...My dad snorted when he heard that song. Whistle punks were folks just learning or school teachers off for the summer...anyway, my dad was a real man in every sense of the word. I miss him. We never went to Eugene, only Roseburg. Lived in a lumber camp above Glide. Great childhood.
