"I have tried, in my way, to be free." Cash is the consummate actor. He consistently sang every song as if it was his life he was singing about. Perhaps the most convincing singer I have ever had the privilege of listening to.

A different take on the Cohen classic. One man...one guitar...that's all it takes to make a classic.

Hmm, just revisited it (& don't worry, I didn't take it as confrontational – & actually I was thinking of the B7 for some reason) and you might be right. I kinda like the sound of the F#m there, but he might be playing F#major. I am pretty positive it's a F# of some kind, even if it is a kind of chord Johnny usually avoids! (Didn't he make some sort of comment on that live album with Willie Nelson about how he'll just look at his watch during the F# partt of the Nelson's song?)

Haha yeah. Wasn't trying to be confrontational or anything! Still don't think that's a minor chord.

Right – see, I guess I shouldn't have taken that for granted. And I agree – F#m is rare for Johnny Cash but it's the only chord that works in this context (i.e. third fret capo), and you can see him fingering what looks like a first-position version of it in the video.

But yeah haha, I just strum along and recognised the G sound instantly. Not sure it's an F#m? Uncommon for Cash. Can't really hear well.

Yeah. I was using my phone and listening through headphones, so I couldn't see the image (loads as a black screen for me on old phones).

I thought it went without saying that he's using a capo.

Yes, but he is playing in the key of G. If you're familiar with blues progressions (i.e. I IV V) then you'll be able to pick this up.

Best version. No question.
