I don't own this song! Lyrics: Well, you're my friend and can you see,

Many times we've been out drinkin',

Many times we've shared our thoughts,

But did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got?

Well, you know I have a love, a love for everyone I know.

And you know I have a drive to live, I won't let go.

But can you see this opposition comes rising up sometimes?

That it's dreadful imposition, comes blacking in my mind.

And that I see a darkness.

And that I see a darkness.

And that I see a darkness.

Did you know how much I love you?

Is a hope that somehow you,

Can save me from this darkness.

Well, I hope that someday, buddy, we have peace in our lives.

Together or apart, alone or with our wives.

And we can stop our whoring and pull the smiles inside.

And light it up forever and never go to sleep.

My best unbeaten brother, this isn't all I see.

Oh, no, I see a darkness.

Oh, no, I see a darkness.

Oh, no, I see a darkness.

Oh, no, I see a darkness.

Did you know how much I love you?

Is a hope that somehow you,

Can save me from this darkness.

Wow this song touches my heart in such a way that it will be hard to shake off will listen to it at least three times in a row. I have struggled with depression and alcoholism it is over whelming sometimes. I have been sober for eight years now I take every day as a new dawn. Well I must listen to the song again.

This and Cash's 'hurt' are the only two songs that can make me cry. Life is a bitch sometimes...

The final line in the posted lyrics is wrong. What he sings is "It's a hope that somehow you CAN'T save me from this darkness." Basically he lets all the negative emotions of sorrow flow throughout the song and he lets it get into your heart and touch you but he still leaves that barely noticable piece of "I'm ready to go through hell again and again just to stop this cycle". It's like the whole song is about how MUCH he cares and only to strengthen his final words, to show what he's ready for or at least what he thinks he simply MUST be ready for. It reaches into another level, although I do believe it really is a cry for help on that level. Therefore the initial emotion persists.

Love this beautifully sad song. Misery loves good company.

For me both Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Cash's version are great for different reasons. It reminds me of depression and Cash's is someone in the depths of it while Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's newer take on his song is someone struggling with depression but is maybe at that point feeling better. Both of them are fantastic in their own way

Play this through a tube amp. Words cannot describe. Even a standard guitar amp (like my deluxe reverb) through the normal channel will yield a warmth you can't get anywhere else.

I See a Darkness is an album by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, a moniker of American musician Will Oldham. Released in 1999 on Palace Records, I See a Darkness is Oldham's sixth album, and the first released under the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker. The album features appearances from Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon, Paul Oldham, and Peter Townsend.Johnny Cash recorded the title track on his 2000 album American III: Solitary Man, with Oldham providing background vocals for Cash's version. Steve Adey also covered the title track on his 2006 LP All Things Real....idiots.
