The concert version from 1981 (Wembley) is far better.

While visiting Ireland recently our tour guide informed us that Johnny Cash had written 40 shades of green after a visit in 1959. No one seemed to know that fact. Our lovely guide sang it for us to a rousing applause. Charming memories.

He did indeed write it but so many Irish people swore it was a trad Irish song, that he dcecided eventually not to put them right. A tribute to him that even now back home in Ireland many people think it's traditional. A great Irish song from a great American

I was amazed to find that Johnny Cash wrote this song, the original and the best. There is one other version worth checking out and it was done by Larry Cunningham. You would have to be a certain age group to remember Larry but he was a top country singer in Ireland through the 60's and 70's, a great singer.

I was on my way to Vietnam in Feb. 1965 with the Marine Corps. About 40 of us were in a bar in Honolulu called Alley Cat (it was in an alley), but it looked like a log cabin. There were about 40 of us from Master Gunnery Sgt. to PFC. Only 11 of us went home 13 months later, although some left early with missing parts. We musta played 40 Shades by Johnny 100 times that night and taken a 1000 pictures. Every time I want to cry I play it and pull out that nights pictures.
