The lesson here I think is that the guns symbolize violence, and the potential thereof. The mother didn't want Billy Joe to bring his guns to town because it's not the people Bill might shoot that she's worried about, she's worried that Bill's pride might get in the way and he might try to draw down. But there's always someone stronger, faster and meaner than old Billy.
