lyrics:

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war

I saw my first pistol in the general store

In the general store, when I was thirteen

Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

So l asked if I could have one when I grew up

Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up

She really blew up and I didn't understand

Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

She really blew up and I didn't understand

Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand

Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt

Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow

Loads a mite slow and i soon found out

It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out

So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45

Called a peacemaker but I never knew why

Never knew why, I didn't understand

Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Never knew why, I didn't understand

Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand

Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Well I get into a card game in a company town

Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down

Shot the dog down, watched the dog fall

Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw

The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed

Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said

Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man

Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man

Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

the devil's right hand, the devil's right hand

Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

Very poor arrangement for Johnny Cash...amazing the man never could give in to the fact 75% of his fame belonged to Luther Perkins, Marshall Grant, W S Holland and Bob Wootton.

Love the song, Bob Seger put this on his new cd, but I think my favorite versions, after listening to them all are Waylon and the Highwaymen, (Waylon, Willie, Kris, and Johnny)......can't get much better than that!

Love the guitar on this song... never knew JC recorded this Steve Earle song. From my understanding, Steve Earle was the protege' of Waylon Jennings who recorded this song as a way to garner attention for Earle. Double edge sword actually... Waylon records your song so that's a feather in your cap... but on the other hand Waylon records your song and shows you how you shoulda done it in the first place and now it's Wayon's song.

On the anniversary of Johnny Cash’s death I felt the world should be reminded of just how great he was

I have nothing but respect for Cash. He did some great cover songs in his time(his take on "Hurt" was way better than the NIN original). But this one doesn't measure up to the original, at least in my book(Steve Earle put this song out on 1988's "Copperhead Road", if you were unaware). Check it out.

Just got a txt from a friend to look this song up because he thought my revolver was mentioned, first one named, and Cash ain't kidding, even going fast it takes a good 5 minutes to load if you've got the powder already in papers.
