It's kinda funny that once we lose the impression that Custer was a hero, we start to idolize sitting bull and Gall. Who were equally evil people.

Custer used captured unarmed women and children as human shields after he attacked peaceful Southern Cheyenne chief Black Kettle's village on Washita Creek, killing the aging and ailing chief and his wife. Before this, after Chivington also massacred many people in peaceful Black Kettle's village at Sand Creek, Red Cloud and his allies (including Crazy Horse) defeated the US in Red Cloud's War, resulting in the often violated 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. The US lost and cheated, and the story continues. The Lakota won a Supreme Court victory in 1981 concerning the Black Hills; but, even though poverty on their reservation is worse than anywhere else in the US, they refuse to accept a very large cash settlement. They want the Black Hills, forever promised to them, returned, part of the US terms to end Red Cloud's War. Custer cut the "thieves road" through the Black Hills in 1874 and was killed in self defense when he attacked Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, their tribes and their allies in 1876.

Actually, most tribes that scalped were usually contracted by governments to attack enemy government homesteads, the scalps were proof of work and traded for supplies.

I love this song! This summer, we visited Washita Creek in Oklahoma where Custer killed women, children and dogs, killing the Cheyenne peace chief Black Kettle, as well. We also visited Fort Abraham Lincoln, out of which he and the 7th rode to the Little Bighorn, where I wrote "Hoka hey!" in the fort guest book. The summer before, we went to the Little Bighorn battlefield and to Wounded Knee. Just over 2 weeks later, the 7th, which did that massacre, lost in their final fight with the Sioux.
