Well goddamn ... stumbled on this little chestnut pretty much by chance. Why anybody would want to sing such lame fucking lyrics is beyond me, but Cash makes it work. Luther getting about as wild as he ever was makes this a worthwhile watch. thanks for the post.

The theme (in its original form) was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, orchestrated by David Rose, and arranged by Billy May for the television series.

Johnny recorded it, then lip-synched it, in 1961 for the TV show, "Record Hop". It was subsequently released by Columbia as a single, but chart action wasn't overwhelming. Lorne Green recorded it, with an altogether different set of lyrics, for RCA and released on a singe in 1965.

Looking at Johnny smirk after the guy said "Good to have You with us" makes me think they didn't get along too well actually.

On this day in 1959 {September 12th} the western series "Bonanza" debut on the NBC-TV network... The series ran until January 16th, 1973 with a grand total of 430 episodes... Its the 2nd longest running TV western series {'Gunsmoke' had 635 episodes}... Two versions of the theme song have charted; Al Caiola {#19 in 1961} and Johnny Cash {#94 in 1962}... Sadly all four original stars have passed away, with Pernell 'Adam' Roberts being the last, he died on January 24th, 2010 at the age of 81...
