I never truly understood this song until I listened to it while reading the lyrics. This is John's attempt to explain that no matter how much money, fame, friends or lovers one has, the sense of true happiness he thought he attained is really an illusion and he can't decipher what happiness looks or feels like. In a way, I feel sorry for John on a basic, humanistic level. This song explains in part, why he has had so many romances over the years and yet can't feel content and experience happiness consistently.
