All this says to me is that there are at least 36 knobheads in this world. How can you not like this?

*John Martin and Kathy Mattea from the very first Transatlantic Sessions in 1995*This is a brilliant performance from John Martyn, and the players include Danny Thompson and Jerry Douglas.

Its just a follow on from that last 'homage' to John Martyn. Many years ago I heard a 'story' which I knew to be true, or at least I have faith in it's authenticity; (the 'source' was impeccable - NO over developed imagination). The story goes that once when Danny Thomson and John Martyn returned to a Hotel after a good 'skelp' on the 'bevy'. Danny was concerned that John was 'at risk', so he decided to 'roll' John up in a carpet and ensure he was 'tilted' on his side against a wall with pillow's at his back to avoid asphyxia! Danny is down stairs having breakfast in the morning, when a member of the Hotel staff informs him that there was some 'expletives' coming from John and Danny's room! Would have loved to have been a 'fly on the bedroom wall'! The 'story' has the ring of truth to it, being that Danny Thomson admit's to having 'looked out' for his pal on many occasion's. John Martyn was renowned as a 'fiery' personality, hard to manage (although he did not suffer fools gladly either, very unpretentious).... Danny Thomson was one of the few characters in John's life that as I am led to believe, 'tempered' John's more reckless moments! Nice to have a good friend and buddy to 'watch over you'! I am sure there is some degree of 'truth' to the 'story' that goes beyond the 'yarn'! Close your eye's and imagine it! The title 'Big Muff' given to John fit's him to a tee! With some, or indeed many, highly creative people, there also abides's the 'wild' self destructive co-habitant's in their character. The world would be so much the less 'interesting' if they weren't, and we would be so much the less 'rewarded' for there moment's to 'madness'! Hope the 'story' has a ring of truth to it. R.I.P. John. The comment's about Kathy Mattea's abandonment of John when he lost a 'leg' and her 'capitalist' music industry 'leanings' that turns it's back on the 'disabled'! Show me the 'evidence'? Like the 'story' I have repeated here, it may or not be true? However, on the balance of probabilities I would err in it's favour. However, be careful of the character assassination that emanate's from where? My 'story' is worth a 'chuckle' however, accusing Kathy Mattea of what amounts to 'discrimination' on the grounds of disablement! Mmmm! Bit strong I think. How easy it is to accuse with absolute proof. Whispering lip's are harmful! Think about it? ((:-)

Wow! Hard to believe but this 'exquisite' rendition of this 'classic' John Martin song still leaves me 'breathless'! John 'served his time' in Glasgow (my home City) and I watched this guy 'live' in his 'formative' years before he moved to London. Way ahead of his time, highly original and creative, he has left a lasting legacy on my own playing (although no pretensions here, I couldn't hold a candle to this man)! Danny Thomson & Jerry Douglas as always on bass and lap steel providing 'magical' backing. Kathy Mattea (no slouch herself), watches John with cat like intensity to harmonise and accompany John's every word to precision. The whole 'session' has captured a 'unique' moment with the very best on show. Not easily 'impressed' and 'choosey' when I give critical acclaim, you would need to be completely out of touch with 'reality' not to be filled with respect at this level of musicianship and to you use that expression used by musician's, "they are in the zone"! Hard to believe also that there is 36 'clowns' out there in 'cyberspace' whom obviously are in a museum, filed under 'extinct'! Musical evolutionary 'dead end's'! There genetic pool is obviously seriously flawed! Endangered species thank heavens. Sad loss, although the man certainly 'lived his life' on the wild side! We will only pass this way once, so enjoy it as best you can! R.I.P John. Sleep peacefully. ((:-) John always leaves me with a smile.

You think Eric Clapton did this best ... wrong! Written by the late John Martyn, performed here on a GREAT BBC show called Transatlantic Sessions. Combining the talents of artists from the British Isles with those of some of the best performers in the Americana music scene. Not enough of his guitar work here, but the man was a giant amongst his guitar playing peers!
