I'm gradually trying to familiarize myself with Hiatt's oeuvre, working my way backward, I guess. I feel like I need to at this point in my life. He's a renowned singer-songwriter, who's influenced countless other performers. Patti Smith comes readily to mind. And what do you know? He is still spinning out captivating musical yarns like this one.

I'm not trying to be mean, but this does sound a lot like Hearts by Marty Balin.

ummm... just because someone writes something doesnt mean theyre talking about themselves or heres a thought.. maybe could have written it about his past. just because its in the 1st person and sounds like hes talking doesnt mean he is. music isnt always literal. but yes it is about substance abuse. and pretty sure he doesnt do any drugs now......

Don't get caught up in what you think it means. Enjoy the fuckin song. THAT is what it means. Don't have to use to relate

Lyrically, John is describing the life of a travelling musician, in this case, a blues guitar player. There are blantant references to various substances '8-ball pounding in my lungs" and "Chinatown chasing that old dragon down". I had thought John had stopped using in the late 80s, but here he is intimate with the language of substance use. I am a GIGANTIC fan, just curious as to other opinions of this glorious song.
