Lyrics:

My baby's gone and I don't know why

She let out this morning

Like a rusty shot in a hollow sky

She left me without warning

Sooner than the dogs could bark

And faster than the sun rose

Down to the banks on an old mule car

She took a flatboat across the shallow

[Chorus:]

She left me in my tears to drown

She left a baby daughter

Now the river's wide and deep and brown

She's crossing muddy waters

Tobacco standing in the fields

Be rotten come November

And a bitter heart will not reveal

A spring that love remembers

When that sweet brown girl of mine

Hair black as a raven

We broke the bread and drank the wine

From a jug that she'd been saving

[Chorus]

She left me in my tears to drown

She left a baby daughter

Now the river's wide and deep and brown

She's crossing muddy waters

Baby's crying and the daylight's gone

That big oak tree is groaning

In a rush of wind and a river of song

I can hear my true love moaning

Crying for her baby child

Or crying for her husband

Crying for that river's wild

To take her from her loved ones

[Chorus]

She left me in my tears to drown

She left a baby daughter

Now the river's wide and deep and brown

She's crossing muddy waters

Now the river's wide and deep and brown

She's crossing muddy waters

Discovered this song and John Hiatt by chance and got hooked--later my son loved it too. The description of a human drama, the attachment to the landscape and by John's masterful interpretation make it a jewel of a song.

Well isn't that a beautifull memorie as well? John Hiatt is so pure, An honest man with honest music. Great sence of humor and a gift to express his (real) feelings. Seems to me that it means something you both listened to John during hard times...

I grew up to this too. I had my little portable CD player and my John Hiatt CD. I thought I was so cool. My mom said that my dad had loved him. I always imagined that it was my dad singing. He died when I was four, and I still listen to Hiatt when I miss him.

By just listening to the song you can tell that it is heart felt, but I was unaware of the story behind it - That puts it in perspective... and you are right, he is an extraordinary talent.

Saw him play this song at the Ryman - Nashville several years ago. Knowing why he wrote this song made it so much sadder, sweeter. Couldn't help but cry.

Heh, I'm not fond of either in general, but I just love John Hiatt. My grandfather used to listen to his music a lot.
