This was the last gig John played with the Who. I was there on the 8th Feb 2002, when John played this 5.15 bass solo for the last ever time. Look at what Pete does at the end.

Thunderfingers is pure badass! If it weren't for him, rock bass players would still be plunking around in the background, meandering at the bottom, never making an emotional connection. He transformed the bass guitar into a lead instrument in rock! Ox, why the hell did you do what you did? Dammit... we miss you, man...you're too awesome... ;'(

as a singer/bassist fronting a Tribute to British rock ( featuring a lot of Who material ,) I'm trying my Best to emulate the late great Entwistle ,... Tommy rox "THE CROSS"....cheers..!!!

Entwistle always played strange stuff in his solos, but here he was pulling out all the stops as they say. He looks like he was having so much damn fun. It's good to remember him like this.

The Ox is the best that Ever was! The Who should have disbanded after his death out of respect.

No dude, Kenney Jones was brought in as a timekeeper. Perhaps you're not old enough to remember that era. Zak was brought in as a cross between Simon Phillips and Keith Moon and he does a great job of it. Yob.

Dude, wake the fuck up - You don't start playing flash over someone else's solo. Zak is the perfect foil for The 'Oo.

I agree with MrModDog and your second point. Keith Moon couldn't be controlled he would just play wherever and whatever. Zach was basically brought in as a timekeeper but there are other videos of him going off and he's capable. I sure do miss Entwhistle too.

that is zachs job here is just to fill in with a back beat nothing special, not to take away from the bass solo

We couldnt see John play alot of the solo because he stuck close to the amp line during it, but he came back during the brief break and had a smoke behind the stacks and waved up at the bunch of us sitting up there - best sound I ever heard at a concert until then, I started buying side-stage seats ever after that.. It is so amazing to see a fan clip from virtually our view, only better.

So fantastic that you filmed this, you must have been within sight of us at this gig, I saw it with my future wife from the restricted-view seats just behind John's side of the stage. (We'd gotten engaged the day before and went and bought a ring after the fact that day in Ealing Common, though we we over on a trip from Canada at the time).

@videostan yeah but Zak is not supposed to be doing anything spectacular here, it's John's solo - this is not a Heven And Hell type situation where everyone is soloing at once.
