John's interpretation of this song was actually totally different than some might interpret it to be here. John was an anti-war liberal kind of guy. When he sang about the USA, he was singing about the same kind of USA that people like Peter, Paul, & Mary were singing about.

I remember being a flag girl on my high school squad and dancing to this. Loved John Denver with his patriotic songs!! Sad the way the times have changed where no one respects the USA anymore. I hate to hear the public of the USA talk bad about the USA. Its funny how they can say all that while on the soil of the USA. But, that's freedom of speech for ya. Put them in another country (with strict rules) and they will be singing another tune. The USA is not perfect (no country is), but I love my country and wouldn't have it no other way. Sincerely, military brat :-)

John was my Idol , thruout the 60's . .but he didnt KNOW the song . . missed the words , and missed the second' NExT' .. . watch for it . . . sorry, but Lee's version was better !!!

I always thought that he got flustered when he jumped the gun on his timing of the lyrics and stuttered a bit, but you are spot on about your view. .

I love John Denver's voice...so pure and beautiful. Great to hear him singing this Lee Greenwood song. (Much of the music I write draws inspiration from John's style and songwriting talent.) I couldn't help notice, however, that when he gets to the final chorus (around 2:40 into the song) he changes a lyric..."and I'll gladly stand up next to you and FORGIVE HER..." What's with THAT?

I saw Lee Greenwood do this live.BUT John Denver BLOWS him out of the Water! John could take anyones song! HE was That GREAT! I MISS him so.I NEVER got to see him when he was here But Father willing,I will when I get to HEAVEN! RIP. JOHN!
