SONG INFORMATION:
(Song notes from "Book of Scottish Songs")
Burns wrote the words of this song, basing them upon an earlier version which appeared in about 1560, "John Anderson" being, as was currently reported, the town-piper of Kelso. The first verse of the older song ran as follows:
"John Anderson, my jo, cum in as ze gae bye,
And ze sall get a sheep's heid, weel baken in a pye,
Weel baken in a pye, and hte haggis in a pat;
John Anderson, my jo, cum in and ze's get that."
The air is also of considerable antiquity, dating back at least to 1630.
(From Wikipedia)
John Anderson (born 1759, Ayrshire -- May 4, 1832, Invergarry) was a Scottish carpenter by trade. He was a close friend of Robert Burns and is reputed to have built his coffin in 1796. He is also the subject of a famous poem by Burns, later set to music called "John Anderson My Jo, John."

But now your brow is bald, John, your locks are like the snow
Yet blessing on your frosty pow, John Anderson, my jo.

And mony a cantie day, John, we've spend wi'ande anither
Now we maun totter down, John, but hand in hand we'll go
And we'll sleep thegither at the foot, John Anderson, my jo.
