The slaggers of JLT (like him or not - a great singer and performer) and this Purple album (which is great on its own merit mind you) fail to mention these points. - House of Blue Light w/ Gillan - average. not highly regarded or memorable.- Battles Rages On - borders on garbage. Gillan even hates it. Richie left for good mid tour. Bringing back Gillan did NOT propel Purple anywhere near what it hoped to as Gillan's return did with the 1984 release and Perfect Strangers tour.- Purpendicular - good album, though not very memorable.- Abandon - average- Bananas - average- Rapture of the Deep - average- everything else after - averageAnybody fair and open-minded enough will admit that Purple did not sack this guy and then suddenly go onto record 7 good albums let alone masterpieces. Just a fact. Like or hate JLT, he was on one of the truly last very good Purple albums, as was Blackmore.Gotta love the trolls that come on social media sites like youtube, fb, twitter, etc and just hurl insults and nonsensical information simply because they don't like something or somebody.

It was a great album.. All good songs -groove melody rhythm very catchy -a thousand times better than Battle Rages On. Definitely up there with Machine Head and Perfect Strangers

Joe Lynn Turner just doesn't realize how badly he sucks . DP doing 80's hair-band power ballads in the 90's . It sucks . No wonder Paice , lord and Glover were so cold to him . It's embarrassing to watch Blackmore & Turner out there in their wigs trying to sell this crap .

I think to say that Slaves & Masters was the last great DP album there was is overrated. Battle Rages On was a very good album as well. Truth is if you've played out all the DP albums and want to hear something different yet relevant then Slaves & Masters would be a good choice to go with. I feel the same way about Come Taste The Band.

I think this guys always overrates himself.............he has a powerful voice but in the end, like Paice put it in an interview, comes from an american pop background......that is why his voice functions in this record, but in the end,its more a late 80s rock album..........

I LOVE this interview series which I just found on youtube.....the one makes me so sad about Jimi Jamison as he was so humble and down to earth and gracious in his interview and he seemed so aproachable, so free of conflict and issues, and obviously a heavenly voice.......I think some just go home earlier because they have more work to do some where else. Godspeed Jimi.

Slaves is a great album it just doesn't beat the classic Gillan/Coverdale albums or Come Taste the Band which is one of my very favorites.

blackmore ruined turners career which is his thing. blackmore hated gillan because gillan was fresh and the only singer to hit double octave ritchie couldnt live with that turner i think lives 10 minutes from blaxckmore on long island

s & m was a great album but it is not even close to albums like BURN, IN ROCK, MACHINE HEAD no one remembers any of the songs included on it. it is also true that is the last relevant thing done by PURPLE. DEEP PURPLE with MORSE it's not DEEP PURPLE , they have put out HORRIBLE albums.

I'm sorry, but Slaves and Masters is not a "great album." It's an OK hard rock album, but it doesn't sound like Purple in the least.

I actually liked The Battle Rages On. It wasn't a great album but it had a few decent tracks and it sounded like Purple. Gillan knocks spots of this guy any time, any place.

Bullshit all right! Gillian hasn't been able to sing well since before "Perfect Strangers". I still like the guy but the years of hard living have taken their toll. If you listen to Coverdale he still sounds great. But you're right about "The Battle Rages On" being an abomination. I don't know what they were thinking? Gillian and Blackmore hated each other it was never going to be good. Turner is okay, he's competent but not a Purple singer. I still maintain they're just a parady of themselves.

Bullshit! "The Battle Rages On" is an abomination, created with colaboration of guys who couldn't stand each other and where Gillan tries to sing in an old-fashioned way, even though he's not cappable of doing so. After Blackmore went out, they slightly changed musical style, which should not be compared to their old material! They still rock n' sound great, just in a bit different style.

It is a great album, hands down. Purpendicular a close second. Facts are facts people - I love Gillan - especially his work with Sabbath - but House of Blue Light was not that good, The Battle Rages On was not that good, Abandon was not that great, Bananas was not that great, etc. Slaves and masters was a great album, JLT has an ego but the album is still tremendous.

What a load of rubbish. Every word you utter shows why the audience tuned out. Yeh, you didn't get the culture and you thought that a load of brattish, American cock-rock stuff was going to work with a British band with an established audience. Purple as Aerosmith replete with PVC, plastic surgery and wigs? Listen to Glover, Lord and Paice talk and then this tripe. Compare. Jealous? Perhaps they just wanted their band back and to make music they wanted to make. I thought S&M was mostly crap.

Pretty bad though when Jon Lord, himself, says they should have never done an album with this guy-Turner was even more cocky than I thought he'd be
