When I first heard Joe Cocker I just assumed he was a black guy. The first time I saw him I was What the hell? That came out of a white guy?

1971:I'm watching "The Girl Can't Help It" on the late show (maybe the greatest early "Rock movie" ever made) and I hear Julie London's classic recording of this tune for the first time. (Trust me, in the context of the plot of the film, it makes perfect sense to have Julie London make an appearance in this particular "Rock movie.")A week or so later, I hear this recording on the radio, as it's just been released as a single from a live Cocker LP, "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," and I realize that this blues shuffle is the same tune I'd heard on the TV a few days before......but it's really DIFFERENT. (One of my earliest "arranging" lessons.)Shortly after that, I find out that the LP is the soundtrack to a concert film of the same name which has just been released to theaters, I go to see it, and I get to see how Leon Russell (whom you're hearing on piano and counting) pulls this huge ensemble, playing his arrangement, all together.(Incidentally, it's one of the best "Rock Concert" films ever made, including the backstage/on tour stuff.)God, what memories.

I used this song in my comments on the recent Senate action, and the whines form the Senators about 'what they've done to the institution.'. Well, cry me a river baby, 'cause I cried a river over you...
