It was 1960-something when I first heard Jimmy perform at the "Bird's Nest" in Washington DC... AMAZING.. sat eye level to his right side.. to hear his "Growling".. the "oil in the tone generators sloshing". the belts turning the rotating horn(s) and feel the wind roaring out of the Leslie 122.. His footwork laying down that rolling bass line and his trademark (well.. almost) drawbar settings..A blurr of his fingers gracing the keys and such innovative pieces. He had a bag chock-full of actual Hammond keys he had broken while playing ... tossed out a few in the audience. Oh to have caught one and kept it all these years! I was probably around 12 at the time.. oh the years to follow hauling MY first organ around then graduating to a Hammond and Leslie speakers. What a special treat that was to have seen him play! Jimmy Smith.. THE BEST!
