Stairway to Heaven was one of the biggest rock songs of the 1970s - loved, imitated and sometimes parodied. Now Led Zeppelin's classic track is back on the turntable, on a re-mastered version of the band's fourth album. 43 years after its release, the song continues to hold a place in many music fans' hearts.

Guitarist Jimmy Page gives a personal account of how a rock anthem came together.

1968 Spirit band's second album called SPIRIT on ODE Records. Check out Side A song #4 Taurus. I think Led Zeppelin in their early days opened for Spirit on some stage somewhere. That's where Jimmy Page ripped the basics to Stairway To Heaven. Why am I posting this? Just so you'll open your eyes a little more with regards to Jimmy Page.

"well, we were performing on tour in 1968 with a band named Spirit and they would always play this song called Taurus. I thought we'd rip the intro off and it took off from there"

Jimmy has always been a musical genius. But when it comes to the occult, he's always struck me as a little kid playing with matches. I'd pay money to watch him discuss that issue with fellow rock legend, Neil Peart, for several hours.

Melancholy eyes of Page link to the memories of a glorious past which confirmed Led Zeppelin as milestones of hard rock with blues influences.
