I think my information may be nearest the truth, this is not the story of a conscientious objector but of a soldier shot for refusing to fight. Soldiers, suffering from what would now be recognised as post traumatic stress disorder, who could not fight on were shot at dawn for cowardice. Our soldier shot a boy soldier and was decorated as a hero, but he could not face the consequences of that action. For their final night on earth those soldiers who would face a firing squad were given food, drink and often the comfort of a woman so that the night would pass more quickly for them. I agree, Jimmy Nail's finest work. Thanks to Chuck Rutland for the info.
