Charted at #2 on Billboard Hot 100 in February 1957 and #4 on the R&B chart. Jimmy's second to last Top 40 hit and his first chart single since "Rag Mop" hit #15 in 1950. The last Top 40 hit was "June Night" which charted at #21 in August 1957. Jimmy passed away in June of 1957. "So Rare" is widely considered as the last major Big Band hit and it was quite a surprise coming in the midst of the wave of rock and roll.
This song had charted at #1 in 1937 for Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians (which I've also posted). Original Billboard review: "A smart arrangement here of the appealing oldie with the Dorsey alto wailing most of the way through. Nice choral effects adorn the side making it a contender for disk jockey and jukebox action. With enough push, this could sell copies." Billboard rating: 85 out of 100.
