James Travis Reeves (August 20, 1923--July 31, 1964) was an American country and pop music singer-songwriter popular in the 1950s and 1960s who also gained a wide international following for his pioneering smooth Nashville sound. Known as Gentleman Jim, his songs continued to chart for years following his death at age 40 in a private airplane crash. He is a member of the Country Music and Texas Country Music Halls of Fame. He was born in Galloway, Texas a small rural community near Carthage.

This is actually the 1973 "overdub" of the 1962 recording, it was was released as a single and was a pretty big hit in '73. The background music on this version is a bit more "country" than the original album cut from the '62 LP "A Touch Of Velvet". I like both versions, after all, it's Jim Reeves' voice, and that's what counts. As one music columnist called him, "An oak among sage grass".
