Jethro Tull - Wond'ring Again

(Ian Anderson)

There's the stillness of death on a deathly unliving sea,

and the motor car magical world long since ceased to be,

when the Eve-bitten apple returned to destroy the tree.

Incestuous ancestry's charabanc ride,

spawning new millions throws the world on its side.

Supporting their far-flung illusion, the national curse,

and those with no sandwiches please get off the bus.

The excrement bubbles,

the century's slime decays

and the brainwashing government lackeys

would have us say

it's under control and we'll soon be on our way

to a grand year for babies and quiz panel games

of the hot hungry millions you'll be sure to remain.

The natural resources are dwindling and no one grows old,

and those with no homes to go to, please dig yourself holes.

We wandered through quiet lands, felt the first breath of snow.

Searched for the last pigeon, slate grey I've been told.

Stumbled on a daffodil which she crushed in the rush, heard it sigh,

and left it to die.

At once felt remorse and were touched by the loss of our own,

held its poor broken head in her hands,

dropped soft tears in the snow,

and it's only the taking that makes you what you are.

Wond'ring aloud will a son one day be born

to share in our infancy

in the child's path we've worn.

In the aging seclusion of this earth that our birth did surprise

we'll open his eyes.

I am a terrible Jethro Tull fan. I never listened to "Living In the Past" enough to realize there was a 'sequel' to the beautiful 'Wond'ring Aloud' track from Aqualung. It's called "Wond'ring Again, and is delightful.

Even after 40 years of listening to this song, it still moves me with its complexity and cleverness. A couple of glasses of wine, and then play Wond'ring Aloud, followed by Wond'ring Again, followed by Look Into the Sun. Perfect.

I used to listen to this when I was young not that long after it came out. The piano playing by John Evan and guitar by Martin Barre is so restrained and just perfect. Barre's tone and bluesy riffs are such a delight to listen to. The rest is great including acoustic guitar, bass and drums plus Ian's voice and words. A masterpiece.

Absolutely 1 of Tull's best, but then again, how do you pick just 1 or 2 faves? Far too many great songs!

A sort of future vision of blighted desolation. At heart an environmental protest song. As such one of his best.

these guys are arguably the most underated band in the history of Popular music Moody Blues as well and neither are in the rock and roll HOF which is beyond a joke

This must have been one of the first ECOlogy songs born out of the hippy movement, although the general populus has wised up a little, were still killing planet earth at an alarming rate we should take the trouble to demonstrate our concerns as much as possible. For the children of the future the time for change is now. On a lighter note the poetic beauty of this song is genius

I found a seamless version of Wond'ring Aloud plus Wond'ring Again (about 8 minutes long) in the Aqualung 40th anniversary CD.
