Jerry told me that he'd written a few songs and started making some money. He'd been out most of the night and came in early one morning, his wife had left him. He looked out a picture window, being late in the year, and some roses were still blooming out in the yard. He thought everything had gone to Hell, but it was a good year for the roses. He sat down at the kitchen table and wrote this in about 20 minutes. True story.

Frickin' awesome song. Doesn't matter whether Jerry, Elvis Costello or George Jones sing it, it makes me cry. The sheer quality of the song transcends the artists' performances.

OT- songwriter story, Jerry in perspective frm Jones Boy: Dallas had a thing about writing songs. When he'd find out Jones was coming to town for sessions, he'd rent a room at the same hotel Jones stayed at and would fill the bathtub up with Budweiser and ice it down. By session time, he'd have at least an album full. Dallas' mgr called his house and his wife told him Dallas had gone out to get cigarettes. Told her to have him call when he got back. Wife said, that was three days ago!!!

A friend who played with Jones told me the story, George and Tammy were in a motel in Nashville, Jerry shows up to pitch some songs. "Ya'll wanna hear 'em?" "Yeah, come on in, we can't find Dallas Frazier." George took Roses, Tammy took "Wonders You Perform." I've wondered, what if they'd swapped. I have the actual demo, Jerry sings it, as another friend in music put it, "Ol' Jerry sure showed 'em how to sing it, didn't he." God bless, Jerry, hope you're seeing this.

@shacknbake1 Yeah, I got his version too, but this is an honor to Jerry Chesnut who wrote the song.
