An immensely popular song for the Ice Man. Gamble and Huff make use of the "volume" to the string section on this record. Mainstream USA were aligning themselves to the story told by the woman in this song (Brenda Lee Eager) to the man (Jerry Butler) about the understanding of their breakup. Released in November 1971, this record went on to score a #21 on the Pop Chart but was whole heartedly an overwhelmingly success on the R&B Chart at #3.

Great music and I often wonder why all the soul singers stoppped singing and making albums when the caucasians bought out Motown and took control of the music industry and ended soul and Black music. We got to do something about this and get rid of that garbage that is bding forced on our youth.

People don't have this kind of understanding any more. The world would be a hold lot better. Understanding and love to the bone. I miss you, Walter Thomas Lacey Jr. R.I.P.

674-haters. I thank God for my husband of 40yrs. He's gone now only in body. I still have his strong love in my heart. I have our children and grandchildren to remind me just how deep our love was.

You can actually understand the lyrics and the meaning of songs back then..the music had a affect on you..you could feel it in your soul...I don't even bother turning my car radio on anymore..this trashy mess they call music today is a bunch of noise in your ear..most of it

Love this song, but of course Jerry Butler was no one hit wonder and even his collaboration with Brenda Lee Eager generated another hit when they remade the Carpenter's hit Close to You.
