This is nice. But to my expert ears...good...for an actor. I loved the movie and Jeff's performance. But I submit for your consideration that the tempo is a tad rushed, the arrangement is too dense, the phrasing of "for a little while" is simplified (the syncopation of the original, which makes it both more conversational and poignant, is lost), there is no significant role, space allowed, for the steel or the lead electric guitar (excessive focus on The Franchise, who is lead singer) until the guitar solo, which, I believe, was actually performed by Buddy Miller {maybe Jeff did it himself, he is a real musician, true}...in sum, too country rock, not country enough in its approach, and insufficient respect for the song itself. Listen to co-writer Gary Nicholson's version on his Texas CD, and then tell me that Jeff's performance is so great. Blessings on the music supervisor for picking this song for the film, and providing a nice paycheck to Gary and Stephen Bruton's estate (the film was dedicated to him; he died shortly after its completion).
