A DEAR JOHN LETTER

Dear John, oh how I hate to write

Dear John, I must let you know tonight

That my love for you has died away like grass upon the lawn

And tonight I wed another, Dear John

I was overseas in battle when the postman came to me

And he handed me a letter, I was as happy as I could be

For the fighting was all over and the battle had been won

Then I opened up the letter and it started "Dear John..."

Will you please send back my picture, my husband wants it now

When I tell you who I'm wedding, you won't care dear, anyhow

Now the ceremony has started and I'll wed your brother, Don

Will you wish us happiness forever, Dear John

I was born in 1953 when this song released the same year. Now 59 I still listen to thyis song very often. Wonderful indeed although the lyric sounded quite unauspicious (at least to anyone named John (s).

This is one of the sad reasons why we have a lot of suicides in the military. sigh*

To Megalou45 There is nothing wrong with Jean Shepard's voice! Can YOU sing like her---- maybe NOT.

I grew up in a poor Polish family of 15 in South Chicago, and when I met my husband he had just gotten back from Viet Nam. The Chinese Asians shot off his testicle, the hookworms infested his body, the malaria almost killed him, the government sprayed him and the other US Marines with Agent Orange, a horrible poison, he suffered from Shell Shock Syndrome and nightmares when he got back. Also drinking, drugging, gambling, womanizing. While in Nam, his girlfriend sent him "Dear John" letter. R.I.P

The hook, at the end of the song, may be the most powerful one in music.
