I don't know if there is enough known about his state of mind to say something like that, but maybe that is the case. I think he made it a point to really suffer to create his art and he certainly made beautiful music, but maybe by doing this he perpetuated his depression more than really overcoming it. Like he defined himself so much with the things he sung about that he didn't give himself the chance to explore what else he can be and live. But who knows for sure what went through his mind.
