I've taken this song differently. For me, it's not just about a guy who travels alone frequently and is lonely. This is my life anthem right now. I'm tired of traveling through life alone. I have a huge family and make friends left and right, but there's still something (someone) missing. I've been traveling alone far too long. This song really hits home to me on a metaphorical level.

For years, I never traveled. Then, I traveled alone to take a hike and stand above a melting glacier on a rope bridge, and was overcome by loneliness in the face of the whole grand experience. Then, I learned how to travel alone. Went to great places, saw amazing things, met people with whom I had profound 24 hour friendships whose faces and mannerisms I could still describe with fine shading, but whom I've never spoken to again. Then, I was up at Friday Harbor on the San Juan islands staring out a hyper-green landscape in the rain - so beautiful you couldn't really look at it without a little ocular mist - and had that same immense wave of loneliness from that first solo travel. This song just nails that moment. When I remember that day, I'll hear this song now, and one day I'll be confused about when this song was first published ;)

Love the Ybor City shout out. Florida, folks, those in Tampa in particular, will understand the reference. Been a fan since his Drive-By Truckers days. One of those amazing bands few too many know of. More talent in their little finger than any of these American Idol jokers have in their whole body. If you love Jason, check out the Truckers Decoration Day album featuring Jason.

I've been trying to place that one chord shift he does at the end of every phrase in the verses, as in "They don't warn the town" and "tryin' to beat the angry snow" because I knew I'd heard it somewhere before, used just as brilliantly. I finally figured it out. It's the same as John Prine's "Hello in There" and lines like "We lost Davey in the Korean War, Still don't know what for, Don't matter anymore."
