Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day, and I suspect Americans had a much more intimate relationship with the holiday. Check out the intimacy expressed here by Mr. Isbell, former member of the once-great Drive-By Truckers.

Jason I hadn't listen to you close since you parted ways with the other guys/gal...but I love it. I love your songs...you are a brilliant guy. I never made it to the left side of the stage in DBT shows to let you know. I hope you keep making amazing music.

I just watched the performance from 2003. It's always great to hear a song travel eleven years down the road.

being from appalachia and growing up in the town where the hatfield/mccoy feud took place, this song touches me deeply. makes me think about war, not just on the battlefield but the wars we have fought thru american history. to gain our land, to gain our rights, our heritage and history.
