I interpreted it as follows: The blue haired fellow is released from jail after serving his sentence. Among his crimes was stealing a ring from Esperanza by cutting off her finger, an act for which he feels a particular guilt. He wants to find Esperanza to return the ring and make restitution (the box contents). In his quest to find her he enlists the trucker and the fortune teller, each of whom try to take advantage of him. In revenge and kills them. Who is evil? Everyone to some degree.
