If Jake Thackray had been born and raised in France he would have been appreciated and considered a National Treasure.

What a fantastic performance from a "talented doesn't even touch the greatness" lyricist, musician and entertainer.

He looks like he's about to be lynched by that audience. They look furious, lol!!

My thoughts entirely Gatto although atmosphere is difficult to assess unless you are there. One of my favourites and a difficult song to perform live but he pulls it off magnificently. How many more gems like this would we have had, had he lived? I paid homage to him a few years back in Georges Brassens Parc, Paris. It seemed only right.

wow, what a humourless looking audience! perhaps they were all too stoned to follow the lyrics.I saw Jake in a small Cambridge club in the 80's and we were all in tears of laughter. R.I.P.

Is this perfection or what? Wonderful.

Wasted......on the pseudo-intellectual crowd. They did not understand a word of it.... Brigadiers...the lot of 'em.

I vaguely remember him form when I was a kid. Great delivery, very witty and funny. Can't really think of anyone else like him...I doubt we will ever see his like again which is a shame. Love the song about the Widow from Brid...genius.

Fantastic post! A mini-novel, beautifully written, set to great music. It can't get any better. You are sadly missed Mr T.

The great man certainly gave us toil and sweat in his concerts

This is a real treat, not only one of Jake Thackray’s best songs ( and there are loads of them) but also a great live performance that perfectly illustrates the humility, warmth and awkward intensity, that he captured in live performance.

“just a story” but what a story it draws you in so intimately that by the time the butcher lifts the cleaver you are in there with the boy feeling the girls pressing little message of her elbows and thighs to let him know her daddy'd gone............... gets me every time. Beautiful!

Which came as news to me, both to the butcher man and me, But who was I to disagree? What with my nose in her breastbone, her haunches in my hand And a chopper in the offing, there was a lot to understand. The cleaver never, never fell. The jealous cleaver never fell. And although my eyes were elsewhere, By a pressing little message of her elbows and thighs She'd let me know her daddy'd gone, tears in his eyes.

In response to this fine song being criminally under-represented in youtube land I uploaded the studio recording, but seeing it performed live is an awesome treat. Thanks for posting!
