Love this film & this scene in particular. It has haunted me since first seeing it & I believe this to be perhaps the saddest song I've ever heard, so beautiful! I honestly can't listen to it very often though as it is too heartbreaking, almost sacred. My take on this scene has always been that, having assisted his friend escape his pain & being unable to end his own, the robot accidentally discovers fire while trying to destroy himself. Like the monkey from 2001 discovering a tool from a bone. This can be viewed as an inadvertent step in evolving or learning he makes, not unlike our own ancestor's discovery of fire. He then proceeds on his journey of discovery into the dark alone but transformed, "on fire" to illuminate his way, as we all must do regardless of our pain with lessons learned. This provides or proves the true humanity he was seeking & possibly possessed all along. As a presumed product of perhaps a race long gone & possibly even unknown to them, he has reconnected with an ancient truth & in the end he is following one of the most basic human impulses of all . Not to stop, die in fear or weakness but to survive, carry on living, forging ahead, regardless. In this way it might be seen as a metaphor for the duality of both humanity & individual, destruction & creation. Though we are part of a society we are each alone, collectively moving onward in the dark. There is no choice. Indeed bittersweet but very true, yet inspiring as creation comes out of destruction in an evolutionary cycle. That's always been my take anyway.Glad to see others her also love this film & song. Thanks for sharing.

I can relate to Jackson's early traumas and how it could it affect relationships in the present. I suffered with it and it truly is better for people like us to be alone.

I think this is one of the best movies ever made the feelings the movie transports without a spoken word and a shown face only with pictures and music is simply amazing

Watched the video and then read this on Wikipedia:"When Jackson Frank was 11, a furnace exploded at his school, Cleveland Hill Elementary School in Cheektowaga, New York.[1] The fire killed fifteen of his fellow students and Frank suffered over 50% burns.[1]"Coincidence?

This is probably my favorite scene to any movie. One of my favorite songs too. The guy who wrote it only did one album. Suffered chronic anxiety and just couldn't bring himself to do another one. Poor guy :( and poor Guy-Man :(
