SHADOW DREAM SONG

(by Jackson Browne)

I meant to call her name

I meant to take her hand

I meant to be the same and understand

Just what was happening in the evening

Between the princess and the prince

I can't be bothered now

And I can't eat or drink

I can't remember how I used to think

What was the song she sang before the morning rang

Bringing the princess to the prince

It's a crystal ringing way

She has about her in the day

But she's a laughing dappled shadow

She's a laughing dappled shadow in my night

If I could hear her voice

If I could see her face

If I could have my choice I'd be in the place

Where I saw her last on the evening past

Of the princess and the prince

It's a crystal ringing way

She has about her in the day

But she's a laughing dappled shadow

She's a laughing dappled shadow in my night

Great song. If you listen to the opening you will hear "These Days" type instrumental.

It was put on a record, actually, just not by Jackson Browne. Tom Rush did a bang-up job on Shadow Dream song on his Circle Game album, which consists mostly of covers of songs by very young songwriters like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Jackson Browne.

THANKS!! I had never heard this song before. It was in a music book of his songs ( I bought in 1975!), but was unreleased as far as I knew. It was the only song in the book I never learned, because I'd never heard it. I gotta drag it out and re-visit it!

this is sooo cool ! I think this song should be played at Jackson's and Toni's wedding as their first song...you are all invited - by the way !

Wow, this is so beautiful. I thought I knew all the early Jackson stuff.. amazing. I'm so grateful it's on here!! Thank you so much. :) Someone very special pointed me in this direction; it's bittersweet for me. JB is the most underrated songwriter in the history of popular/rock music. Every bit as good as Dylan and then some, IMHO.

Tom Rush does this on his Circle Game LP. Kudos to Jackson for the lyrics, but have a listen to Rush's deep voiced, emotional take on the song. Superb!

So many elements of "These Days" are poking through. Maybe he canned it and repackaged it to use as These Days. In my opinion, he could have done both. (And he wouldn't have to sue himself for copywrite infringement either) LOL

I've always loved this JB song since I first heard it on the Nina Demo. My sister was friends in New York with Nina, who was JB's voice coach when he was very young. He really grew a long as a singer and songwriter from those days, but this song was proof of his precociousness.

This song kicks ass compared to for example "I`m the cat" or some other shit songs. Never really released is not that cool, but kinda interesting.
