Nightingale is one of Jackson Browne rarities, the unreleased track from his first album.

the song is written by Jackson Browne and recorded by the Eagles in 1972.

it's for ALL the fans, especially the ones who had never heard this version.

Lyrics;

I'm hanging on to my peace of mind

I just don't know

I'm hanging on to those good times, baby

Just want to let them roll

I'm gonna make it to the light and joy

I'll tell you why

I got a woman who can take me there

the apple of my eye

oh, I just don't know, no no, no, no

I love her so

Don't let me see that morning paper

cause I don't need those dues

it's just the same old murder movie

but they call it the news

I'll tell you what would be some story

and what would set me free

Is if the same thing happened to everybody

that just happened to me, oh,

I just don't know, no, no, no, no

I'll never let her go

Every time I hear somebody sneakin'

up behind whoa, I turn around

but I still hear that sound

and just when I'm about to lose my mind

Here comes my baby

singing like a nightingale

Coming my way down along that devastation

trail well tell the Lord above

she's got a brand of love

that cannot fail

I'm hanging on to my peace of mind

that's no lie

I'm hanging on to my special friend

the apple of my eye

my inspiration, too

she's got a lead on my heart and

my soul and she knows just what to do

oh, I just don't know, no ,no, no, no

No, I get so low, and my mind's about to go

but wait a minute, here comes my baby

singing like a nightingale

coming my way down along that devastation trail

Well, let the fires burn, let the

floods return

we will prevail

Hanging on to my peace of mind

I just don't know

For whatever reason this will not play past 15 seconds for me. It won't load. : ( I was looking forward to hearing the original version.

Though he is underrated, he really only wrote this and Take It Easy which the Eagles performed. Other than that he had input on a few other songs; "Doolin Dalton", "Doolin Dalton/Desperado Reprise", and "James Dean."

the more I think about it............. this song definitely got "Eagle-ized" by the boys. The piano really cooks on this one. Wish there would be a legit version of this. Come on, Jackson, put it out there! Dunno if this about Laura Nyro or not, but damn.... if they had become an item... the kids they could have had..... the songs they could have written together..... ah..... the great "what could have been".

I happen to like the Eagles version, but I am now currently listening to the Browne version for the very first time. Ya know what? He should have put this on his debut album! Perhaps it might have fit better on For Everyman.... who knows. This would have broken up the serious mood of the debut a bit. Wonder how many more unreleased gems he has in the catalog?

Browne is sadly underrated. as Springsteen put it, "wrote the songs the Eagles wish they'd written."
