Jack White gets more heat from selfproclaimed experts than he Deserteure. This was a great rendition. Checkout the version by that gaslight anthem guy, now that's garbage.

I've never been a Jack White fan, but 'goodnight Irene' is one of my favorite songs and love the pedal steel. He brought both of those together in a fantastic way. Maybe my thoughts on Jack White might change.

One of my favorite songs. Another reason I like Jack White. Check out him singing Wayfaring Stranger.

I saw him in Dublin in june he sang this song last after the PA was turned off. He just carried on playing. Genius! Best gig ever.

The most beautiful part of this song is Jack's personal goodnight to the NY crowd.

Leadbelly did not "give birth" to this song.

I bet a lot more people have than you think.

Who gives a fuck. Leadbelly probably didn't write the song, he was just the first to record it after so many years of it being passed down orally. It's a folk standard, it's everyone's song.

I actually think Jack's voice makes this version very endearing.

but you see that is the beauty of music transcending the person who first gave birth to it, regardless of whether they (the people there) have taken the time to experience the different versions of this song they are still being moved by it, that is the real magic.

Oh dear, as much as I think Jack White does a way awesome cover of Son House's Death Letter, this, on the other hand, is a terrible cover because the song is really held up by Leadbelly's soulful, strong voice. Jack White's voice doesn't have much soul and just makes the song sound plain and arid.
