This song is mind-bogglingly beautiful. The melody, instrumentation, arrangement, lyrics and, of course, Gerry's immediately identifiable voice -- honestly, it nearly reduces me to tears it's all so lovely. Glad he gets some air-play even today -- but this man is certainly an under-appreciated musical genius. I don't think his City to City and Night Owl albums have one mediocre song on them -- not one. Especially bittersweet when one considers the sad way his life ended. Blasted combo of alcohol abuse and probably some kind of mental illness, seems to me. Awful. An artist missed, a loss to the rest of us.

Everytime i here this song i just about choke up lyrics are something else i get great identification from Gerry and his lyrics people talk about Burns being a great poet and song writer. Wouldn,t want to take anything away from the man but he is not in the same league as Mr Rafferty
