It seems like Adrian Smith's profile in the band was really being pushed during this period. The Somewhere In Time album featured three songs written solely by Adrian - this being significant because they are the first and only songs written solely by him - two of them being the albums singles, with "Wasted Years" being one of the bands most popular songs. He is also credited with backing vocals on the initial pressings of the album, most notably on "Wasted Years." "Reach Out" is the only lead vocal Adrian has recorded with Iron Maiden, and was featured as the "B" side of the "Wasted Years" single. Adrian also contributed two other songs that, although written by other people that he was doing a side project with, were recorded by Iron Maiden and used as "B" sides ("That Girl" and "Juanita").Adrian could have been the lead vocalist in any other band, but when you have Bruce Dickinson, Maiden had that spot covered.
