Did you know that before they go one stage they all like to stick giant burning crosses up their asses while meditating surrounded by goat blood flavored incense? Fascinating! Any other theories? It is completely open to interpretation, but I think it is less about achieving goals and a bit more about staying in there and learning to appreciate life when you are really down, have no self esteem, possibly suicidal :) And I see the goal part more as a motivation to live for something and enjoy.
