I love his voice especially in this song. As far as I know, this is the only version of Dave doing this song on Youtube. Subscribe for more videos. Enjoy!

Lyrics:

Little girl, little girl, don't lie to me

Tell me where did you sleep last night?

In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines

I shivered the whole night through

My daddy was a railroad man

Killed a mile and a half from here

His head was found in a drivers wheel

His body hasn't never been found

In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines

Well shivered the whole night through

You've caused me to weep, you've caused me to moan

You've caused me to lose my home

The last words that you'll hear me say

Was I want you to sing me a song

In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines

Well shiver the whole night through

Little girl, little girl, where'd you sleep last night

Not even your mother knows

In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines

Shivered where the cold winds blow

Oh yes, I certainly do realize how lucky I was to see him at that time and place. I was 14 and had to have my big brother take me down to the "Village". He wanted to see the "Paul Butterfield Blues Band" at the " Bitter End". I badgered him to seeing Van Ronk. Today he admits that I made the right call. b

Oh, Yes I do realize how lucky I was to see Dave Van Ronk at that time and place. I was 14 and had to have my brother take me to the "village". He wanted to see the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I badgered him into going to see Van Ronk and today he's glad I did. If you like Dave Van Ronk you should check out Furry Lewis, he had a big influence on the way Dave played .

Okay, he's been a favorite of mine since I first heard him. Is there a way to edit your own posts after they're posted? I hate sounding like an idiot in my comments. Guess i need to proof read more carefully.

In 1964 or '65 I got to see Dave Van Ronk play at the Gaslight in Greenwich Village. He's been a favorite of mine since I first hears him.

Lovely version...never heard Dave Van Ronks voice sound so mellifluous, sensitive and understated.

Sweet and soothing; but the song goes deeper. Check out the Leadbelly version; or Google => MURPHY INTER PINOS
