From 1971's From the Witchwood

Lyrics:

The old house stands deserted

Crumbling and decaying

Its broken windows watching

As a young child wanders

In amongst the roses

Overgrown and falling

The garden once was cared for

Life is like the garden.

The roses reach to touch her

They whisper as she passes

Their petals form a carpet

Soft and warm and scented

In amongst the roses

Full in bloom and fading

The young child cannot hear them

Life is like the young child.

The young child has been gathering

Flowers for her mother

Flowers for her bedside

Flowers for her table

In amongst the roses

She is gathering wild flowers

The roses bend to kiss her

Life is like the roses.

The old house stands deserted

Crumbling and decaying

Its broken windows watching

As a young child wanders

In amongst the roses

Full in bloom and fading

The young child cannot hear them

Life is like the young child.

the tony hooper era def had an innocence - the dave lambert era leaned a tad toward decadence but neither gtrist was the cause - love the Strawbs - the richest palette of any of the proggers -superb lyrics [also Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep....]

Beautiful song about a ghost like child, moving & scary at the same time. Somehow the song takes me back to the 19th century. Maybe I was there?

@peterikarlstad Get Grave New World, the album after this. It's a concept album about a man's journey through life and has more different musical styles on it than you can shake a stick at, from hymn like choral singing to olde-tyme dance bands. Incredible!

The song almost sounds like it would fit right into a Stephen King novel turned movie.I always found it sadly sentimental and downright eerie. But that means I really like this song. Never heard him (Cousins), do it live though.

Ah, so this song is about peyote? Just joking. Discovered this album "by accident" the other week. I have never been into folk rock, but this is really special. I´m definitely going to check out more stuff from this band.
