Sid Vicious.. really? After all these years I had no idea. When the song came out we were in college & us Mott & Ian fans each had are own theories as to who he was memorializing. Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones. Oh well the song is one of so many great ones that this guy has done over his long career.

I grew up with Mott the hoople, when i was in a band between 1978/1984 we use to put this song on while packing up after rehearals. this is a top song.

Thanks for explaining. The dates of death are very confusing. I know I am old and rock history blurs my mind, but I sure thought I heard that song right after Marc died. it is a great song whoever it is for.

Maybe you should go read Ian Hunter's website. He answers the question directly. It's a ballad for Sid Viscious.

Great song save for the fact that its a blatant ripoff of Iggy and the Stooges 'I GOT SHIT'

IH has stated many times that this song is about Sid Vicious. It also says so on his website.

Marc Bolan (T-Rex) died young in a car accident. Media started garbage about drug use. Then Ian went out and wrote this song, to notify people that Marc's death had nothing to do with drug abuse. "It wasn't silver needles" is this songs message. I can't believe that anyone could think this song had anything to do with Sid Vicious. That is very misleading and totally wrong.
