For some reason known only to himself Luther decided to use the neck pick-up instead of his usual choice of bridge pick-up. Also in those days the early Telecasters had a capasitor on the neck pick-up pot that gave what Fender called 'Deep rhythm tone', which some guitarist used for bass lines as there were not many electic bass's around at that time (Marshall used an up right bass for a long time before switching to an electric bass).

The main reason his guitar sounds 'funny' is because he is using the neck pick-up which gives a Telecaster a more 'warm' sound, he usually use the bridge (lead) pick-up which gives a 'sharper' sound, and that's the sound on most of his recordings.

@ObbaWalkthroughs The reason Luther's guitar sound "funny" is......he's not deadening the strings with the heel of his hand as much as he usually does.

@JohnnyCashSongs Well, maybe it's quite nice. Glad it wasn't the guitar, Luther looked quite humiliated already, poor fellow. He never liked playing live or in TV..
