Early in Bing Crosby's career, jsut after leaving the Paul Whiteman band, this song was his first major solo hit, recorded in January, 1931 with Gus Arnheim's Coconut Grove Orchestra. Enjoy!

Most people don't know that Bing predicted Elvis' success. Perhaps he saw a little of himself in Elvis.

Bing Crosby is the one and only person who can sing with such feeling and emotion. His music is more entertaining than any of the " music " that is played in this day and age. Honestly I don't know about this world anymore

Thelonious Monk appears to be on another planet with this piece and his piano needs tuning. Give me the sonorous pipes of Bing Crosby any day.

I love this version even more than the more majestic and contemplative 1939 recording. Thank you so much for posting this!

Hope I'm not leaving this comment for a bunch of old fogeys but you might be interested in a version of I Surrender Dear that is so beautiful and so heartfelt and just exemplary in every way. It's by Thelonious Monk from the album Brilliant Corners. It's solo piano and you can hear it on utube. I like Crosby's singing here but I'm not sure what the hell the band's doing in the breaks. Anyway, hope you like Monk's interpretation.

Jan 19, 1931: Bing Crosby records "I Surrender Dear" for Victor w/the Gus Arnheim band; the song is heard by CBS radio pres & Bing lands a solo radio show. The song also goes on to chart for 10 weeks, topping off at #3.

Sometimes what you do best can be remembered by when you did it. In my opinion, this was Bing at his finest, just before he became Hollywood. His vocal range and expression during that period really make you wonder what happened afterwards. In case you didn't know, he made movies, sold orange juice and had books written about him by his children. It doesn't matter. These early recordings remind you of what he was capable of.

I can just see all the great stars dancing to this at the Grove. Wonderful tune, lovely lyrics, and so nicely done- a great representation of that "wonderful" decade, the 1930's . despite the crushing depression, the decade I've always thought was the most incredible for music, movies, invention, classic and classy people, when there was such a thing as class. Seems rare now. Thnaks for posting this.

...and Barris was one of Bing's fellow "Rhythm Boys" when they sang with Paul Whiteman, striking out on their own in 1930, until Bing decided to become a solo performer...
